Family Caregivers
If you are caring for a special needs child, a sibling, a spouse, or a dear friend–and especially if you are the primary caregiver–you are probably experiencing a great deal of stress.
You devote a huge amount of time and energy to caring for your loved one. You may not be getting adequate amounts of sleep or exercise. You may be missing your friends. You arrange your schedule around your loved one’s needs. You give up a great deal of freedom and autonomy. At times, you may feel resentful, which then makes you feel guilty.
You run the risk of becoming isolated and depressed.
Who is caring for you?
My hope is that you have a network of friends and family members who you feel comfortable asking for help when you need it, who will check in with you to see how you’re doing, bring you and your family a meal, or take over for you so you can get out for awhile.
But even if you are this fortunate, and many caregivers are not, there will still be times when you feel overwhelmed, when you feel physically and emotionally exhausted.
How I can Help
Hawayo Takata, who studied with Mikao Usui (the creator of Reiki practice) and introduced Reiki practice to the States in the late 1940s, said that she hoped one day Reiki would be as common as aspirin. Yes, it’s that good.
A Reiki session, either in-person or from a distance, can immediately give you a sense of peace and balance. You can take even better care of yourself by scheduling periodic sessions—weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.
And if you learn Reiki practice yourself, you will have the power of self-healing at your fingertips. Many people understand Reiki to be a method of hands-on healing for others. Yes, you will be able to share your Reiki hands with the loved one in your care. But at its core, Reiki is a method of self-healing. In order to truly help others, we first need to help ourselves. A self-healing session of 15 or 20 minutes a day can create peace and balance in your day.
